Beveled Tenon

Detail: The Beveled Tenon is a key element in furniture design, particularly in creating mitered corner joints within panel structures like table surfaces. This term specifically denotes the two elongated, protruding tenons and the two shorter mortises fitted with corresponding tenon slots. When a piece has four edges, the extended sections are labeled "long edges," while the recessed, mortised sections are known as Beveled Tenons. This technique bolsters the mitered corners' sturdiness and contributes to the furniture's aesthetically balanced proportions.

Process: The Beveled Tenon method entails affixing a strip of wood along the end grain of the panel so that it meets the thicker board at a precise mitered angle. Close to this corner, a straight tenon interlocks with the Beveled Tenon, mitigating any potential warping or distortion of the thicker board. This technique skillfully masks the exposed end grain of veneered or solid panels, simultaneously accommodating the natural movement of the wood, which in turn reinforces the panel's durability and robustness.
