An Outstanding Huanghuali Painting Table

17th Century
Painting Table
Cocobolo (Huanghuali)
81.5 x 182.3 x 73.7 cm

  • The table features a standard mitre, mortise, and tenon construction with a flush, two-board floating panel that is tongue-and-grooved into the mitred frame, including exposed tenons on the short sides and a frame that moulds downward to a beaded edge.
  • It has a beaded-edged apron with ruyi-shaped spandrels that are butt-joined and tongue-and-grooved to the underside of the table and to the legs, adding to the table's intricate design and structural integrity.
  • The design is complemented by square-sectioned legs, each with a centrally grooved wide band and similarly grooved corners, which harmonize with the four faceted square-section S-shaped braces that have grooved edges and are mortise-and-tenoned into the legs, half-lapped, and wood-pinned to the transverse brace for enhanced support.
