A Huanghuali Couch-Bed, Luohan Chuang

Late Ming Dynasty
Couch Bed
Cocobolo (Huanghuali)

  • The seat frame is crafted with precision, employing standard mitre, mortise, and tenon joinery with visible tenons on its shorter sides. It is supported by three transverse braces integrated into the long frame members, and two additional braces connecting the short frame members and the transverse braces for enhanced stability. The frame, designed for a soft seat, has been refurbished with coconut webbing and an antique mat seat, and features a completely flat edge above flat aprons that are meticulously joined to the straight legs, which conclude with discreet low hoof feet.
  • Structural reinforcement is provided by rectangular stretchers, expertly joined to the legs just behind the aprons. The unified back and arms are crafted from a single wood piece with breadboard ends, gracefully arcing outward at the top, adding a fluid and elegant line to the chair's silhouette.
