A Huanghuali High Yoke-Back Armchair

Late Ming Dynasty
Official's Armchair
Cocobolo (Huanghuali)
L58.3 x W45 x H115 cm

  • Fashioned from select wood, this item is distinguished by its flowing contours and an elegantly contoured top rail that doubles as a headrest. The 'S'-shaped back splat, ornately carved with a floral medallion, fits seamlessly into the top rail and the back section of the seat frame through tongue-and-groove joinery.
  • The rounded stiles, which are tenoned into the top rail, sweep through the seat to form square-sectioned legs. The extended 'S'-shaped arms, which are mortised and tenoned into the stiles, are supported by slender 'S'-shaped braces that taper gracefully.
  • The seat frame is characterized by visible tenons on its shorter rails and is underpinned by two horizontal braces. Its edge subtly dips and tapers inward, culminating in a slender flat band.
  • A sculpted beaded edge enhances the front apron, contrasting with the simplicity of the side and back aprons. The legs are interconnected by rectangular stretchers with evident tenons, harmonized by plain-shaped aprons.
