Early Qing Period
Square Stool
Cocobolo (Huanghuali)
46 × 46 × 52 cm

  • Typically, we encounter stools with round legs lacking a waist or square-legged horseshoe stools that include a waist. However, this particular square stool stands out with its distinctive combination of round legs and a pronounced waist.
  • The stool's top features a single board framed by a mitered corner joint, its edges finely sanded to a smooth, rounded finish. Underneath, the top is braced by two sturdy through tenons. The waist of the stool is slender and flat, offering a sleek transitional element.
  • A three-way miter joint masterfully unites the apron and legs, with the apron’s rounded contour harmoniously complementing the circular legs.
  • The stool's crossbars bridge the legs and feet, providing robust structural support. Each of the four legs connects at two points, ensuring the stool maintains a stable foundation on any surface.
