DENT-Young, Esther

Deng-Young has a first degree from Taiwan and a further degree from the University of Madrid. She has taught in Thailand and was teaching Spanish and English at the Chinese University of Hong Kong at the time of publication. Under the pen-name Tao Yang, John and Esther Dent-Young are joint authors of Borrowed Tongue.

FAN, Xing (樊星)

Born in 1985, Fan is a poet and translator. She holds an MA in English Studies from the University of Macau. At the time of publication, she was working on a PhD research on comparative study of contemporary Australian and Chinese women's poetry that involves creative writing and translation studies. She has published two bilingual poetry collections, Lost in the Afternoon (2009) and South of Words(2018).

FUNG, Mary M. Y. (張曼儀)

Fung started writing creatively in secondary school. After her postgraduate studies at Columbia University, she returned to the University of Hong Kong to teach translation and contemporary literature. She co-founded and edited a number of literary journals. Bian Zhilin's poetry sparked her interest in modern poetry, and she began to translate poetry into English after moving to Canada in 1994. She also translated works by Hong Kong writers including Wu Yin-ching and Wong Leung-wo.

GOLDBLATT, Howard (葛浩文)

Goldblatt was Research Professor of Chinese at the University of Notre Dame from 2002 to 2011, and is a prolific translator of modern Chinese fiction, renowned for his translations of the Nobel Laureate Mo Yan, among others. He is the founding editor of the periodical Modern Chinese Literature.

HOLTON, Brian (霍布恩)

Born in Scotland, Holton spent his early years in Nigeria. He studied Chinese at the universities of Edinburgh and Durham. He taught at a number of universities in the UK, and taught translation for ten years at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He began publishing his Scots translations of the classic Ming novel Shuihu Zhuan (Water margin) in 1981, and is currently the only publishing Chinese-Scots translator in the world.

HUNTER, Duncan (韓登勤)

Hunter taught in the Division of Language Studies, Community College of City University of Hong Kong, where he was programme leader of the Associate of Arts in English for Professional Communication. His 1994 Translation of The Fig Tree – Memoirs of a Taiwanese Patriot by Wu Zhuoliu was republished in 2002 by 1st Books Library.

Henry Wei-Leung

Henry W. Leung was born in China, then raised in Honolulu and the San Francisco Bay Area. His publications include Goddess of Democracy, Paradise Hunger, and his translations of Wawa's poems, Pei Pei the Monkey King. He has received fellowships from Kundiman, Paul & Daisy Soros, Fulbright, the Luce Foundation in Translation, and the Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program in International Law. His work has appeared in Bettering American Poetry and he has been awarded notable mentions in the Best American Essays and Best American Nonrequired Reading.

Ip received her BA and MPhil in Translation from the University of Hong Kong. She joined the Research Centre for Translation, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 and served as Managing Editor of its magazine Renditions. Her research focuses on the translations of traditional Chinese literature into English and German.
