Sun Yat-sen Roads in the World

Roads being named after Dr. Sun Yat-sen have long been the cultural landscapes in the Greater China Region and a number of countries overseas. In important respects, Sun Yat-sen Roads is an important manifestation of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's status and reputation in the Chinese speaking world. Particularly important is the unique history and landscape of different cities represented by those Sun Yat-sen Roads. Perhaps most significantly, this research can be considered as "the posthumous turn" in Sun Yat-sen studies, which helps fostering the analysis of how people's memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen are being constructed, conserved or reconstructed. Furthermore, the naming, design and usuage of the roads not only are closely associated with the past, present and future of a city, but also conceal the usage of and competition for power. From perspective of socio-cultural history, Sun Yat-sen roads is a portrayal of a fascinating connection between individuals, city and nation, and the living space. Considering the popularity of the naming of roads and the utilization of road names for commemorative purposes among modern nation-states, this project attempts to enrich the Sun Yat-sen studies by applying the global comparative study approach in order to push them beyond the layer of Chinese history. This project mainly focuses on exploring urban, social-cultural and compariative histories through Sun Yat-sen Roads in hopes of promoting Sun Yat-sen studies.
