Pencil Drawing of Dr. Sun Yat Sen

Pictorial Representations of Sun Yat-sen

Dr. Sun Yat-sen was honored as the father of the Chinese Revolution and a national hero. To advocate the revolutionary ideas among overseas Chinese, he had spent a long time abroad. Therefore, since the nineteenth century, his name has appeared not only in Chinese newspapers, but also the worldwide media. As a new dimension of Sun Yat-sen studies, this research project collects pictures of Dr. Sun in newspapers around the world and investigates the making of Dr. Sun’s heroic images. Although Dr. Sun and his activities were widely reported in overseas papers, this database gathers only his pictorial images. It is well understood that the quantity of Sun’s images that appear in Chinese newspapers was far more than those in foreign newspapers, but the latter was no less exciting in terms of diversity.

Some of the images contained in this database had been displayed in the exhibition titled “History in Images: Pictorial Representations of Sun Yat-sen in Newspapers beyond China since the Late 19th Century,” which was held in Hong Kong Baptist University Library from 02/11/2021 to 19/12/2021. This database becomes the depository of the exhibition.
