Synopsis:
The story describes a seventeen-year-old girl’s fear and despair after taking a THC pill and getting raped by a stranger. Her mother, a widow whose hopes were all centred on her two daughters, and her family experience the dilemma between justice, reputation and money, unveiling the common perception of gender and poverty in Hong Kong at the time.

Biography:
Born in Shanghai in 1919, Huang graduated from Fudan University and moved to Hong Kong in 1950. He worked as a teacher, writer and editor, and founded the literary magazine 《人人文學》[Everyman’s Literature]. He went to Malaysia as a teacher and the editor of 《蕉風》[Banana Wind] until he returned three years later. His publications include the novels 《靜靜的嫩溪》[Quiet Streams] and 《落月湖》[Lake under the Moon].

Solomon is Professor in the Department of Chinese Literature, University of Lyon (Jean Moulin Lyon 3). His publications have focused on the biopolitics of translation, developing a critique of the disciplinary divisions of the Humanities in their relation to the economic and political divisions of the postcolonial world.

Born in Hong Kong, Hung received her doctorate at the University of London. She was the Director of the Research Centre for Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and editor of the literary journal Renditions. She has translated works by Wang Anyi and Eileen Chang into English.
