人工智能 (AI) 技術在人類社會的出現引起對人工智能技術的各種描述，這些描述不但出現在新聞報導中，也出現在虛構和幻想的世界裡，尤其是科幻大片（blockbusters）。這些電影以壯觀的視覺效果和流行的（甚至是公式化的）敘事方式，吸引了全球觀眾。這些電影描述了機械人（包括各種相似人類的機械人）如何進入人類的日常生活，並塑造了大眾對人機互動的看法。這些電影也常遭到批評，認為其歪曲了機械人在人類社會中的角色。本計劃包含三個部分： （1）分析並可視化科幻電影相互引用（「致敬」）的網絡；（2）對觀看科幻電影的青年人進行焦點小組訪談；（3）彙總傳播學領域涉及機械人的學術文獻。 通過以上混合方法的研究設計（mixed-methods design），這三種方法彼此呼應，探討了科幻電影如何描繪機械人，以及這些描繪如何反映在人類的生活方式以及媒體和傳播領域的學術研究當中。 研究結果幫助人們瞭解大眾對技術創新的看法，還探討了人工智能和人機交互的倫理議題。
