Born in Hong Kong in 1964, Chan received her PhD in Comparative Literature from The University of California, San Diego. She was the editor of two literary magazines in the 1980s and co-founded the poetry magazine 《九份壹》[One over Nine]. Her publications include the poetry collections 《距離》[Distance] and 《錯失》[Faults].

Lai studied at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Bristol. She taught English Literature and Translation at the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University until her retirement in 2004. She has translated works of a number of local authors, including Leung Ping-Kwan (Ye Si) and Xiao Si into English. In 2009, she was awarded “Outstanding Translator Award” at the Eighteenth Hong Kong Stage Drama Awards by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies.

Lam has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists since 1984. She obtained her MA degree from City University in 1997. At the time of publication, she was working with the Hong Kong Arts Centre as Education Programme Director. She organised the First Hong Kong International Poetry Festival in January 1997.
