Born in Nanjing in 1928, Yu fled to Taiwan in 1949 and received university education there. After publishing his first poetry collection in 1952, he co-founded a poetry society with other young authors and went to the United States in 1958. He arrived in Hong Kong in 1974 and joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he nurtured aspiring writers and produced many of his best-known works.

Born in Hong Kong in 1934, Lau went to Taiwan and the United States for his postgraduate studies in literature. He taught at a number of universities in Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States. His publications include 《吃馬鈴薯的日子》 [Days of Eating Potatoes] which records his student life in the United States.

Goldblatt was Research Professor of Chinese at the University of Notre Dame from 2002 to 2011, and is a prolific translator of modern Chinese fiction, renowned for his translations of the Nobel Laureate Mo Yan, among others. He is the founding editor of the periodical Modern Chinese Literature.
