Synopsis:
The story traces the experience of a small group of friends from the early 1970s, when they participated in Protect Diaoyu Islands Campaign in Hong Kong, to the early 1990s, when they had to make major decisions about their future because of the 1989 democracy movement in China and its aftermath. The author sets her characters against an overshadowing backdrop, yet manages to highlight their lives as individuals.

Poon studied translation at the University of Hong Kong and received her MA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her translations include Chinese Ceramic Pillows: the Mr and Mrs Yeung Wing Tak Gift and Chinese Archaic Jades from the Kwan Collection. She also translated the two stories “Watching the Sea” by Chan Po Chun and “The Ghost Festival“ by Xin Qi Shi published in Hong Kong Collage, ed. Martha Cheung.

Pollard served as Professor of Chinese at the University of London from 1978 to 1988 and Professor of Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1988 to 1997. He has written extensively on modern Chinese language and literature as well as on aspects of translation. Among his translations are The True Story of Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren: Selected Essays.
