Biography:
Born in Hunan in 1921, Cheung came from a family of scholars who were alienised and suffered considerably during the Cultural Revolution. Before moving to Hong Kong in 1980, he worked as a journalist in Shanghai and became an editor and columnist in various local newspapers. His publications include the essay collections 《倒影》 [Shadow] and 《牛棚雜憶》[Memories at the Cattle Depot].

Pollard served as Professor of Chinese at the University of London from 1978 to 1988 and Professor of Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1988 to 1997. He has written extensively on modern Chinese language and literature as well as on aspects of translation. Among his translations are The True Story of Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren: Selected Essays.

Her research focuses on the translations of traditional Chinese literature into English and German.
