The story weaves fantasy and reality to explore the history of Hong Kong, as in other stories written by Dung Kai-cheung. Wing Shing Street itself is imaginary, yet its neighbourhood is realistic. At every turn of the narrative, the readers are prompted to examine the process of fictitious creation while being emotionally drawn into the ambience of old Hong Kong.

Born in Australia in 1961, Patton received his PhD from Melbourne University. He currently works as a freelance literary translator and teaches Chinese language and translation at the University of Queensland. Born in Hong Kong, Hung received her doctorate at the University of London. She was the Director of the Research Centre for Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and editor of the literary journal Renditions. She has translated works by Wang Anyi and Eileen Chang into English.

Ip received her BA and MPhil in Translation from the University of Hong Kong. She joined the Research Centre for Translation, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 and served as Managing Editor of its magazine Renditions. Her research focuses on the translations of traditional Chinese literature into English and German.
