The story weaves fantasy and reality to explore the history of Hong Kong, as in other stories written by Dung Kai-cheung. Wing Shing Street itself is imaginary, yet its neighbourhood is realistic. At every turn of the narrative, the readers are prompted to examine the process of fictitious creation while being emotionally drawn into the ambience of old Hong Kong.

Born in Hong Kong in 1967, Dung Kai Cheung has written a number of short stories and novels, including 《地圖集──一個想像的城市的考古學》( Atlas: The Archaeology of an Imaginary City ) and《時間繁史: 啞瓷之光》(Histories of Time).

Ip received her BA and MPhil in Translation from the University of Hong Kong. She joined the Research Centre for Translation, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 and served as Managing Editor of its magazine Renditions. Her research focuses on the translations of traditional Chinese literature into English and German.
