Synopsis:
The story depicts the local gambling culture and social atmosphere in the 1950s to early 1960s. Mr Ding, a legal clerk who struggles with the spike in daily living expenses, puts his only hope for social mobility on the weekly lottery ticket. After 15 years of trying his luck, he finally wins the prize, but the ticket is nowhere to be found.

McClellan is Senior Lecturer in Chinese at the University of Edinburgh, where he did his first degree in Chinese and a PhD on Zhang Henshui's fiction. His teaching and research centre on 20th-century popular, populist and 'pure' fiction, as well as a range of May Fourth and contemporary literary writing.

Ip received her BA and MPhil in Translation from the University of Hong Kong. She joined the Research Centre for Translation, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 and served as Managing Editor of its magazine Renditions. Her research focuses on the translations of traditional Chinese literature into English and German.
