Born in 1918 in Guangzhou, Gao arrived in Hong Kong in 1944 and worked as an editor at several local newspapers. His works are best known for reflecting the social reality of Hong Kong, and they tend to be sceptical of the political environment amidst the Handover of Hong Kong. His famous works include 《香港二十年目睹怪現狀》(Two Decades of Hong Kong Oddities).

Her research focuses on the translations of traditional Chinese literature into English and German.
