Synopsis:
The short story is set on a specific day in late 1967, the year when a major reversal took place in Hong Kong due to a series of pro-Communist riots. The work depicts the fear and the wave of emigration among the privileged and well-educated, as well as the essence of urban Hong Kong in that eventful decade.

Born in 1918 in Shanghai, Liu moved to Hong Kong and worked as an editor for various newspapers. In 1963, Liu published the novel 《酒徒》[The Drunkard], which was one of the first Chinese-language novels to use modernist techniques. His works continued to influence and nurture Hong Kong writers.

Pollard served as Professor of Chinese at the University of London from 1978 to 1988 and Professor of Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1988 to 1997. He has written extensively on modern Chinese language and literature as well as on aspects of translation. Among his translations are The True Story of Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren: Selected Essays.

Ip received her BA and MPhil in Translation from the University of Hong Kong. She joined the Research Centre for Translation, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 and served as Managing Editor of its magazine Renditions. Her research focuses on the translations of traditional Chinese literature into English and German.
