Biography:
Born in Hong Kong in 1939, Lu started her career as a teacher in a secondary school after graduating from the university. Lu has published a total of 21 books that revolve around the main themes of patriotism, nostalgia and gratitude to teachers. Her publications include the essay collection《路上談》[On the Road]. For decades she has been the pre-eminent researcher of Hong Kong literature.

Lai studied at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Bristol. She taught English Literature and Translation at the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University until her retirement in 2004. She has translated works of a number of local authors, including Leung Ping-Kwan (Ye Si) and Xiao Si into English. In 2009, she was awarded “Outstanding Translator Award” at the Eighteenth Hong Kong Stage Drama Awards by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies.

She also co-edited anthologies including An Oxford Anthology of Contemporary Chinese Drama and Hong Kong Collage: Contemporary Stories and Writing.
