Description | After 1945, Taiwan culture was affected by Japan during the Japanese colonial period. Although the Republic of China who took over Taiwan tried to rebuild the sense of belonging of Taiwanese towards China, Taiwanese are passionate about Japanese culture and refuse the governance of Chinese. This illustration is inspired by Taiwan culture that was influenced by Japan. In this illustration, a monster called Kaiming 開明, which is a huge tiger with nine human heads from Shan Hai Jing 山海經 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas), is adapted as nine hannya 般若 masks from Japanese culture, meaning that Taiwan is a region that used to share the same culture with China is strongly affected by Japanese culture in 1945 till now.
