Base Tenon

Detail: The base tenon is a style of tenon joint crafted to anchor column bases firmly in place. It is frequently employed at the base of standalone columns or where columns intersect with beams or piers. Variants of the base tenon include through tenons, half-tenons, and blind tenons. This particular tenon joint is designed to secure the base of a column and thwart horizontal movement. Beyond offering a more robust connection than conventional straight tenons, base tenons also aesthetically conceal any gaps between the tenon shoulders and the mortise, thereby elevating the visual coherence of the structure.

Process: As detailed in the "Engineering Manual of the Board of Works" from the Qing Dynasty, the guideline stipulates that "for each column measuring one foot in diameter, an extra three inches are to be added to the dimensions of both the upper and lower tenons. The top tenon's length should be gauged at 3/10 the diameter of the column. The base tenon may possess either a square or round profile, with its terminal end fashioned marginally smaller. This end is intentionally tapered to simplify the installation process."
