Floating Tenon

Detail: The Floating Tenon is a prevalent joint technique used in rounded furniture elements. It's especially useful for attaching armrests to seats and back legs, as well as connecting intersecting bed rails, like those with cross or frame designs. This joint is characterized by the horizontal component's shoulder that wraps around the vertical piece's exterior, with the tenon's shoulder curving elegantly to form a seamless link. The tenon's dual shoulders flare out like wings in mid-flight, giving rise to its "Floating Tenon" moniker.

Process: Constructing the Floating Tenon entails sculpting a recess on the vertical member's exterior that aligns with the shoulder's dimensions. This recess is distinct and does not merge into the mortise itself. Such an arrangement ensures a sleek and level junction between the horizontal and vertical components.
