How to Use This Catalogue

The user can either search or browse for information in this catalogue.

1. Search

   Clicking ‘Search the Catalogue’ from the home page or bottom of the window will open a new page that allows the user to search OTCL using a variety of options. The user can search the following singly or in combination:

   LWV numbers
   Title/Keywords/Numeric code of theme
   Work of Lully
   Genre
   Composer
   Key
   Mode
   Source

   To display information on all arrangements in a particular source, simply select its library sigla and source code under ‘Source’. To view the concordances of a particular piece, select the LWV numbers and click the search button. To view information on a particular work of Lully (e.g., Armide), simply select the appropriate option. For example, the user can search for all sarabandes in G minor by selecting the appropriate options. Clicking ‘reset options’ will allow the user to embark on a new search.

   To search with numeric codes, the user must enter at least four digits derived from the theme being searched for, because entering fewer than four will in most cases generate a large number of results, rendering the search somewhat meaningless.

2. Browse

   Clicking ‘Browse the Catalogue’ will open a new page containing an itemized listing of the entire catalogue. Pieces are ordered by LWV numbering, and pieces with no LWV numbers are placed at the end. For each piece, the following information is provided:

   LWV number Work Title (date), Title of movement (key)
   e.g., LWV 2/4 Ballet des plaisirs (1655), Entrée (Le Marié et la mariée) (G major)

   Information from LWV is provided for reference only and does not imply that an arrangement is based on Lully’s original prototype. During the seventeenth century, an arranger could have worked from a range of materials other than Lully’s official versions that circulated in print or manuscript, such as another arrangement, a reduced score (with or without figures), a melody or even an aural recollection (see Chung 1998, i:99–139).

   Concordant keyboard arrangements, sorted by library sigla, are listed under each piece. Each arrangement is identified by library and shelf number, source code in brackets, location in the source (pages or folios) and key in brackets. LWV 2/4, for example, currently has eleven concordant versions. Simply click an arrangement to see more detailed information in a new page. For each arrangement, the following information is provided:

   Summary description of Lully’s original version (from LWV)
   Summary description of the arrangement
   Thematic incipit
   Concordances (if any)
   Modern editions (if any)
   Facsimile editions (if any)
   Literature
   Notes (if any)

   The user can click any concordant version to access its full record in a new page. Likewise, clicking for information on facsimile editions, modern editions and literature will open a new page displaying the relevant information.

   The user can return to the home page anytime by clicking the OTCL icon on the upper left-hand corner of the page.

   It should be self-evident that the user can view bibliographical information on original sources, modern editions, facsimile editions and literature from either the home page or the bottom of the screen by clicking the relevant term starting with ‘Browse’.
