Length Tenon

Detail: The Length Tenon is distinguished by its design, where a long tenon slots into an equally elongated mortise, complemented by a shorter tenon fitting snugly into a shorter mortise. This interplay of varied lengths yields a robust and supportive joint. Length tenons can stand alone or integrate with other woodworking joints, like the Chuck Tenon or Inserted Shoulder Joint, which employ length tenons for flush connections. This type of joinery is frequently employed to unite panels with linear components, providing a reliable structural link.

Process: The Length Tenon joint is constructed by fitting a long tenon and a shorter tenon into their respective mortise and tenon grooves, utilizing the disparity in their lengths to achieve an interlocking effect. For instance, when attaching the legs to the edges of a panel, the leg component is fashioned with one long and one short tenon set at right angles to each other, which then join with the mortises on the edge. Because the edge joint employs a mitered tenon, where the two mitered sides converge with the leg piece, it is the Length Tenon alone that can ensure a robust and secure connection.
