Exploring the Database

  1. Expand the scrolling 'Item List' and choose all items/an animal/a soundscape you want to know more. You may also type the exact name in the 'Search' box (e.g. All Items).
    • 'Search' box is case-sensitive so make sure you click the desirable choice when it pop-ups (e.g. Red-billed Blue Magpie).

  2. Select one of the four survey 'Periods' (e.g. 2016-2019 Breeding).
    • Drop-down list will only show periods with the animal/soundscape recorded.

  3. Select one data type (e.g. Species Diversity).

  4. Click 'Search' icon, or 'Reset' for new criteria. Search results by 1km2 grid will be shown on map, with corresponding legend at bottom right corner.
    • Due to mass number of entries, searching for 'All Items' may take about a minute to generate results.
    • Bird atlas surveys in 1993-1996 breeding season: Only occurrence but not the number of individuals was recorded. Result of abundance will be shown as 'Presence (no accurate count)' (e.g. Black Kite, 1993-1996 breeding season).

    • Birds released from captivity (e.g. White-rumped Shama): Species in Category III are not part of the official List of Hong Kong Birds. Therefore their occurrence is only shown for reference. For more details, please visit 'List of Hong Kong Birds' under 'Species' section.

    • Other animals / Soundscape: Non-systematic recordings. Result of abundance and diversity will be shown as 'Presence (no accurate count)' (e.g. Asiatic Painted Frog, 2016-19 breeding season).
