BACKGROUNDS FOR "NEVER SO FEW"
FILMED IN BURMA
There is every reason for the World War II Burma jungle battle scenes for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "Never So Few" to be realistic. Director John Sturges and Millard Kaufman, who wrote the screen play from Tom Chamales' best-selling novel, knew what it was all about.
Sturges rose from Private to Captain in the Air Force and Kaufman from Private to First Lieutenant in the Marines. Between them, they saw action on every major front of the war, and both received the Bronze Star for combat injuries.
Frank Sinatra and Italy's beautiful Gina Lollobrigida in her first Hollywood movie are teamed in "Never So Few," with co-starring roles played by Peter Lawford, Steve McQueen, Richard Johnson, Paul Henreid, Brian Donlevy and Dean Jones.
Battle skirmishes along the Burma Road and other scenes with Kachin natives were filmed on a 27,000 mile location trip into Burma, Thailand and Ceylon. The picture is in Cinema-Scope and color.
