“THE LADY RACKETEER"

——THE STORY——

Ling Yung-kuan, a young oversea Chinese from Canada, arrives Hong Kong by a commercial aircraft, disappointed that his uncle Chuang and his wife are not at the airport to receive him. Instead, there are two strangers on hand to greet him, and an honest chap as Ling, he almost entrusts all his luggage to them, thinking at first they were sent by his uncle Chuang. Luckily, a Mr. Chao, who introduces himself as a real estate broker, successfully foils the two men’s trick in favour of Ling, Ling is of course very grateful to him, but in a hurry he has forgotten to even ask his name and address.

Ling contacts his uncle Chaung by the telephone after he has settled down in a hotel, and the Chuangs are caught in a surprise at first figuring Ling would be arriving only a few days later. Ling reckons his father must have given them the wrong information, but he does not mind at all. when he eventually sees his uncle Chuang, he hands over a cheque for $ 400,000 to him for custody—the money is earmarked to buy some real estate properties, and also to enable Ling to get himself a wife.

The Chuangs give Ling a dinner party and accidentally Ling meets the Mr. Chao. In expressing once again his sincere thanks to him, Ling is approached by a very charming, young girl and he is vary much impressed. Ling brings Mr. Chao over to his table and introduces him to the Chuang — when Mr. Chao reveals his business, the Chuangs ask him to help Ling buy some real estate properties. The next day the Chuangs bring Ling to pay Mr. chao a visit at his office, and Mr. Chao assigns one of his senior staff, by the name of Ku, to assist them.

Ku starts to bring Ling around town looking for real estates offered for sale. When they come to a beautiful house, Ling sees the hanging of a picture of the girl he has met at the restaurant. Now he learns she is really Mr. Chao’s niece, Chao Tsui, who wants to sell her parents’ house after their deaths. Ku brings Ling over to Miss Chao’s present residence, where she appears very friendly to Ling; and Ling, of course, is completely over-powered by her fascinating charm.

In their frequent meetings thereafter, Ling is introduced by Chao Tsui to know her cousin, Henry, who is said to be quite a millionaire himseif, but is losing ground very fast since he has indulged in gambling. Henry’s wife begs Miss Chao to help to rid Henry from such bad habit. Miss Chao enlists the assistance of Ku to put up a trap, in which Henry would suffer miserably, all the money won would go to Henry’s wife. The scheme moves Ling’s heart deeply, admiring Miss Chao’s ‘nobility’ to render such kind of help to her cousin, so he voluntarily offers to join with $ 100,000 to play the game vis-a-vis Henry. But Chuang refuses to give Ling the money, so he apologizes to Miss Chao who tells him it is quite all right, when Mr Chao and Mr. Chuang join them later, Mr. Chao severely criticises Henry for living such an extravagant life; he also blames his niece on her part of trying to help her cousin ’the wrong way’. Both Chuang and Ling are very much impressed by Mr. Chao’s straight-forward sense of duty.

One day just as Mrs. Chuang is bringing Ling to go having a look at a prospective ‘bride-to-be’, Miss Chao displays utter displeasure and jealousy. Ling tries hard to explain and even escort her to night clubs. When Miss Chao pretends to get drunk, she is touched by Ling’s gentleman-like manner when he takes no advantages of her whatsoever. But Mr. Chao is displeased at Miss Chao’s fraternality towasds Ling, while the Chuangs themselves are preparing to match Ling Miss Chao. At large sum of ‘deposit money’ is almost lost for sure at their pronounced date of engagement, had it not been for Miss Chao, who by now has discovered she is really the sister of Ling when they were lost during their childhood days.—and so, she revolts against Mr. Chao instead and betrays his scheme of trying to cheat Ling for his money. Mr. Chao admits that he is licked. Ling and Miss Chao, as she is still known then, have a happy brother-meets-sister family reunion!
