“Star of Hongkong”
(Synopsis)
Pretty Wang Hsin-Lien is the only daughter of Dr. Wang Chun Po, the chief of the Hong Kong Refugees’ clinic, and is studying at the Japan Women's Medical College.
While back in Hong Kong for the winter vacation, she goes to Sony's Hong Kong Branch to have her transistor radio repaired. There she meets Toru Hasegawa, a tall and handsome young man.
In Tokyo, Hsin-Lien is staying with Mr. Gentaro Sugimoto, an old friend of her father, and becomes a very good friend of Miss Kanako Sugimoto, a dress designer. Kanako recommends beautiful Hsin-Lien to a professional photographer as a model, and they go to Hokkaido to take part in the snow festival. They enjoy skiing but unfortunately Kanako sprains her ankle slightly. The young man who kindly comes to her rescue is none other than Toru, much to the surprise of Hain-Lien. As Toru is staying at his own home in Sapporo on leave, he takes Hsin-Lien to the TV Tower and the University of Hokkaido for a tour. The two become more and more friendly after coming back to Tokyo and they go out almost every Saturday. Chang Ing-Ming, who is a pupil of Dr. Wang and has come to Japan for research, scolds her for neglecting her studies. Chang's accusation plus her suspicion that Kanako loves Toru, make her give up her love for Toru and she decides not to see Toru again.
Toru, however, waits for her outside the college gates in the rain. He tells her that he is going to Hong Kong again. Determined to make Toru break with her, she lies to him, saying: “I am engaged to be married to Chang Ing-Ming." Toru leaves for Hong Kong, feeling lonely and downhearted.
At the end of March, Wang Hsin-Lien graduates from the College and at the same time Chang also finishes his advance studies and they return to Hong Kong together. However, she does not stay in Hong Kong but goes further on to Singapore, after passing the HK government examination. Prior to her departure, she has sent an invitation to Kanako to come to H'kong. When Kanako comes to H'kong and meets Toru, she tells him that Hsin-Lien is not engaged to Cliang. She has gone to Singapore in order to make way for Kanako. After hearing this, Toru asks to be sent to Singapore and finally locates her at Kuala Lumpur in a hospital. There, for the first time he tells her his love and proposes to her.
Suddenly, she is informed that her father has had a stroke. She hurries to her father's bedside. In the arms of his daughter, Dr. Wang asks her pardon for not giving her much of home life because of his work and passes away.
Toru, on the other hand, is to be transferred to San Francisco immediately. He tries to speak to Hsin-Lien on the phone from the airport, but he cannot reach her as she is in the church praying for her father. Toru, at last, gives up and gets on board the Jetliner. Hsien Lien arrives at the airport, only to wave at the departing plane.
