THE GARBAGE GIRL
(Synopsis)
In distinctive contrast to the heavenly atmosphere of a worldly known metropolis, there drift such children of destiny known by their nicknames as Ta Mao, Ku Kwau. Shiu Tien, Shu Kao and Shu San. They make an uncertain living by digging the garbage. Sometimes they may be lucky enough to get a meal, but in many times they have to go hungry. When the wintry northern gale is blowing high, Ta Mao, after a day’s hard toil, has to find shelter in a secluded corner on the deserted roof top.
But one day when Ta Mao is going through her daily garbage digging routine, a limousine speeds by and stops right in front of her. Out from the car steps a maid addressing Ta Mao as her mistress, and telling Ta Mao that "grandma* is fatally ill longing badly to see her missing and beloved "Judy". Ta Mao is pushed into the car without being allowed to ask question.
The said grandma of a very rich family is so happy to see Ta Mao her "darling Judy" who finally returns to her. She embraces Ta Mao affectionately, and she is no longer a sick woman. For the sake of pleasing the old woman and saving her life, the rich family has to accept Ta Mao as "Judy" and treats her as a member of the family.
One day Ta Mao sees Ku Kwau and her former crowd from the balcony. She rushes down to welcome them into her house. Too excited to locate the proper entrance, those kids start to climb over the fence; some sneak in through the dog hole under the wall, their clothes being bedly torn. Nevertheless under the guidance of Ta Mao. they all land in the house safety.
Madame Chien and Madame Yien bring their adopted sons George and Thomas, both being typically of modern playboy type, to visit the grandma and "Judy". The two ladies are astonished by Judy’s bearty as much as her wealth, and they scheme to make their adopted sons to court Judy. A battle of love is thus started and many comical scenes are introduced.
In a charity ball staged for the benefit of the poor children. Ta Mao appears as a noble young lady, whose bearty becomes the center of attraction of the ball. Thomas and George both try their best to win Ta Mao. not knowing that Shu San is hidden under her skirt. Meanwhile Ku Kwau and others of her former crowd also participate in the ball. Judy, making use of their presence, invites them to peform an act to portray the poor and destitute children, whose realistic acting has won much sympathy and applause from the enthusiastic audiences.
But amid all the laughs and gaities, the real Judy steps in all of a sudden. A big confusion and turmoil follow, as a fight eventually ensues between the real Judy and the imposter. The Cindrella dream of Ta Mao is awaken and completely blown off.
The northern gale is still blowing high. Those children of disting are again shivering under the zero weather. And who knows how they are going to last until daybreak——or where they will be in tomorrow?
