——Synopsis——

Teenager Ah Lan's widowed mother dies in a fatal accident,leaving her kids to fend for themselves.

Ah Lan’s first job as a maid servant exposes her to the acrimony stinginess and humiliation that a rich but cantankerous household can mete out to menials

Her younger brother Ah Biu, peddling balloons in the street, sustains injuries while resisting underworld bullies.

Disgusted, Ah Lan quits the rich family to join an electronic factory while Ah Niu finds a job with an iron workshop. For the first time, songs of joy fill their little wooden hut.

However, the joy is short-lived before a disastrous fire strikes, almost ruining the hut.

Adding to this misfortune is the injustice of the iron workshop’s proprietor who has the audacity to ask Ah Niu to share his penalty for hiring a minor under 14.

Meanwhile the electronic factory steps up its output by adopting the conveyor belt system for spare parts assembly. The ever-increasing speed of the system turns workers into robots straining them to the utmost exhaustion without the humanitarian care for their physical health.

When Ah Lan ' s friend Chen Chen is fired by the electronic factory on no other grounds than her ill health, Ah Lan wakes up to the ugly reality, turning a new leaf in her life by joining the collective ranks.
