Burr Puzzle
Detail: Within the realm of traditional woodworking, a distinct mortise and tenon creation known as the Burr puzzle emerges. This intriguing piece or puzzle game is comprised of six short wooden sticks, identical in length, thickness, and width, interlocked via various mortise and tenon joints. Central to each piece is a notch that aligns and interlocks with a corresponding notch on another piece, resulting in a cruciform dual intersection. The six individual wooden elements are allegorically named after the ancient six arts: rites, music, archery, chariot driving, calligraphy, and arithmetic.
Process: The assembly of the Burr puzzle is an exercise in mutual constraint. It consists of six wooden sticks with square cross-sections. Two parallel sticks facing one another constitute one set, resulting in three such sets in total. These trios are oriented perpendicularly to each other, akin to the X, Y, and Z axes in a three-dimensional coordinate system.
