Sliding Tenon

Detail: The Sliding Tenon is frequently employed to join the sections of convertible sofa-beds or to connect enclosures with the bed frame. This mortise-and-tenon configuration is designed for removable furniture parts, facilitating straightforward repairs and minimizing damage risk. Commonly, a separate wooden block serves as the tenon, inserted into the component as a substitute for its native tenon. Known also as a "floating tenon," this mechanism features a dovetail profile that provides a secure fit yet permits effortless disassembly. Sliding Tenons are extensively applied in column construction and furniture assembly.

Process: The Sliding Tenon is constructed by placing a tenon between two detachable components. This tenon is tapered, narrower at the top and wider at the bottom, and is slotted into the broader end of an opening. It is then slid towards the narrower end to establish a snug connection and vertical hold. For disassembly, the tenon is simply shifted back towards the wider portion of the opening for withdrawal.
