Dowel Joint

Detail: Dowel joints are prevalent connectors in contemporary modular furniture assembly, appreciated for their streamlined manufacturing, effortless assembly, conservation of materials, and adaptability to large-scale production. Despite these benefits, their joint strength and stability are somewhat inferior. Dowel joints serve as viable substitutes for right-angle tenons when furniture parts demand moderate joint strength or simple alignment. Within framed furniture, they facilitate frame linkages, and in panel-style furniture, they are frequently employed for fastening and accurately positioning panels.

Process: The dowel joint fulfills two main functions. Initially, it aids in precise positioning, often in tandem with eccentric connectors that lock into designated spots. Secondly, it is employed for permanent attachments, typically using an interference fit or dual-sided adhesive. During assembly, holes are drilled into the workpieces, adhesive is administered, and the dowel is firmly inserted into the hole with a hammer. Pressure is maintained until the adhesive sets, solidifying the bond.
