A Pair of Rocking Chairs
19th Century
Rocking Chairs
Ipe (Zitan), Burl
83.5 x 52 x 96cm
- The rocking chair, which is not typically associated with traditional Chinese furniture, appears to have been introduced by Western influences during the mid to late Qing dynasty.
- This exceptional pair of rocking chairs is expertly crafted from Ipe. The smoothly curved crestrail is formed from a single piece of wood and features relief carving of twin bat heads. An exquisite burl wood panel is set within the oval-shaped backrest. The plush, woven seat is designed as a detachable insert, and all the mortise-and-tenon connections are firmly secured with wooden pins.
- Carved into the back of each headrest is the inscription, "Authentic imported Ipe, handpicked by Tang Baochuan at Guang Chenglong," indicating the select craftsmanship and origin.
