Huanghuali Bookshelf

Late 18th Century
Bookshelf
Cocobolo (Huanghuali), Cupronickel
175 x 110 x 51.5cm

  • This bookshelf features a minimalist structure, with just one shelf at the bottom and a drawer/bookshelf unit in the middle. The openwork balustrade carved with ruyi and floral patterns between the shelves and drawers offers a striking contrast to its otherwise simple design.
  • When discovered, the bookcase had been skillfully converted into a cabinet, with panels nailed to its sides and back. It has since been restored, but the outer frame still bears the scars of time.
