Shirley Jones' True Story Suggests
Fantasy Quality of “Carousel” Role
Shirley Jones, who co-stars with Gordon MacRae in Twentieth Century-Fox's Cine-maScope 55 film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Carousel”, is probably the rarest Hollywood star extant. Although the sole worthwhile theatrical credit she possesses is a second lead in a road company of "Me and Juliet," the petite, 21-year-old blonde is already the star of two motion pictures with an aggregate cost of about $10,000,000 一 Rodgers and Hammer-stein's "Oklahoma" and Carousel." Furthermore she was given star roles in the two pictures without ever having seen either production in their long runs on Broadway or on the road.
As befits the subject of such an extraordinary experience, Shirley is an extraordinary girl. She was no star from Broadway, having been in the chorus of "South Pacific" and in "Me and Juliet," but her luminous quality was instantly recognized wherever seen. Here's her fantastic story:
She walked into an agent's office in New York with a letter from her vocal coach. He listened and after talking it over a few minutes, they signed her. After 10-weeks' seasoning they put her in the role of "Laurie" in the Todd-AO screen version of "Oklahoma,” which so far has been exhibited only in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Darryl F. Zanuck and Twentieth Century-Fox officials saw her in this and signed her for "Carousel" without even giving her a test. This has been done only with established stars, but is unheard of in the case of a player of brief experience.
Shirley was born Shirley Jones, March 31, in Smith,Pa. (Pop. 800), to Paul Jones, proprietor of a brewery owned by his family for generations, and Mrs. Marjorie Williams Jones. She is an only child.
She showed talent for singing as a child. At the age of six she did a solo, "Froggy Went A-Wooing," and never looked back. Her parents were able and willing to give her voice lessons with Ken Welch in Pittsburgh, 28 miles away. For this and many, many other reasons she has always maintained the closest relations with her parents and re-gains them unimpaired to this day. Among other things, her father is her business manager and still gives her an allowance, although it's Shirley's own money now.
She was chosen "Miss Pitts-burgh” in the “Miss Pennsylvania” division of the Miss America contest and as a con-sequence won a year's scholar-ship at "the Pittsburgh Play-house; where she took instruction and gained valuable experience. She had stopped off in New York on her way to New Jersey to investigate enrollment in college there when she called upon the agent, Gus Schirmer; That was the end of college and the beginning of a career.
SYNOPSIS
Billy Bigelow (GORDON Mac-RAE) is questioned in heaven by the starkeeper (GENE LOCKHART) about what he did on earth.
His story begins one night in an amusement park in a small Maine town in the year 1900. Billy is the barker for Mrs. Mullin's (AUDREY CHRIS-TIE) carousel and is the special attraction of two factory girls, Julie Jordan (SHIRLEY JONES) and Carrie Pipperidge (BARBARA RUICK). Julie is mesmerized by Billy's breezy personality and when Mrs. Mullin accuses Julie of fooling with Billy, he quits his job.
Billy leaves the girls for a drink and Carrie, mystified by Julie's actions, takes the opportunity to confide her secret that she is plighted to Mr. Snow (ROBERT ROUNSEVILLE), a herring fisherman.
When Billy returns to the girls, they are warned by Mr. Bascomb, Julie's boss who happens along, and the town police-man, that Billy has a record of bedazzling girls and taking their money. Julie disregards their admonition.
Julie and Billy, missing for days, turn up at Nettie Fowler's (CLARAMAE TURNER) restaurant on the pier where fishermen gather to announce that they have been married.
Two months later Billy is talking with his unsavory friend, Jigger (CAMERON MITCHELL). They plot to rob Mr. Bascomb of the mill's payroll, using a clambake at Nettie's as their alibi. Billy wavers when he learns at the festivity that Julie is to have a baby, but, not wanting to be labeled a coward, he slips off with Jigger.
While waiting for the mill owner, Jigger wins. Billy's share in the prospective loot. When Billy and Jigger attack Bascomb, he whirls, disarms Jigger, draws a pistol and calls for help. Jigger breaks and runs. Bascomb orders a policeman to follow while he covers Billy. Billy, too, makes a break and as he leaps to the roof of a shed, he slips and falls backward on his own knife.
Julie, returning from the clambake, comes on the scene and rushes to Billy just as he dies. Helplessly, she turns to Nettie.
The scene returns to heaven and Billy is allowed to look down, where he sees his daughter Louise (SUSAN LUCKEY) being snubbed because of his misdeeds. Billy is permitted to visit her, becoming visible as he chooses. He consoles her and gives her a star just as Julie comes in to take her to the high school exercises. Julie. sees the star and ponders it.
At the graduation, the invis-ible Billy whispers to Louise to believe the speaker when he tells the graduates that they cannot lean on their parents' success, nor be hampered by their parents' failures. Louisa's young face lights up and Julie is caught happily in the contagion of her joy. Billy, still invisible, walks off with the Heavenly Friend—his job done.
Gordon MacRae Had Feelin'
He Was Right for “Carousel”
Gordon MacRae is a persistent fellow. He wanted to snig "Billy" in Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Carousel”, ever since, while still wearing the uniform of an Air Force lieuten-ant, he saw the play in New York in 1945. He has sung "So-liloquy" and other songs from it in night club engagements for years and when he heard that Twentieth Century-Fox was to make a screen version, laid siege to the part.
He stirred his agent to fren-zied activity and bombarded Production Chief Darryl Zanuck, Producer Ephron and others with telegrams proclaiming his suitability. He signed for a three week engagement in a stage production of the vehicle in Dallas so that studio folk could see how well he played the part. But before the opening Curtain at Dallas, he knew Frank Sinatra had been signed for the role.
But MacRae never gave up. Dallas saw him at his very best and when the run ended, Gor-don kept the sideburns and long-ish haircut he had grown for the role so that he would be instantly available for the picture.
"I knew that I was right for 'Carousel' and that 'Carousel' was right for me," he explained later. "When things are right, they usually work out. I always felt that I would do the picture."
And, of course, he did. Sina-tra and Twentieth Century-Fox met head-on over the issue of shooting the picture in two pho-tographic systems—the new 55-millimeter and conventional Cine-maScope. The upshot was that the day before the production started at Boothbay Harbor, Me., Sinatra walked out. Twen-tieth Century-Fox first replaced him with MacRae and then filed suit against Sinatra for $1,000,000 in New York Supreme Court.
Like Director Henry King, MacRae has some feeling for New England and New Englanders. He was raised in up-state New York and attended Deerfield Academy, in Massachusetts, and admires and tries to live in New England virtues of honesty, thrift and industry.
Born of a well-to-do family, he lived a happy childhood and was absorbed with athletics, specializing in lacrosse and football. It was a singing family, too, and when Gordon decided to make this his career, he was urged only to do it well.
It is an interesting footnote that his first real break came when he replaced Sinatra, who had fallen ill, for a performance on an NBC radio show. This led to a contract and all his subse-quent success.
