THE LADY OF LUTE (TSUI NG NAN)
Synopsis
Tsui Ng Nan was married to a scholar Choi Pak Kei. She was not only noted for her beauty and intelligence, but she was also a perfect wife as well as a dutiful daughter-in-law in the eyes of her neighbour Cheung Kong Chai
It had been Choi’s greatest desire to get the highest graduate from the Government, however, he didn’t want to leave his aged parents behind for the examination. But on the other hand, Choi’s father wished his son to achieve fame and success, and to be somebody in his field, so he bitterly reproached Choi for having no ambition to aim high, and finally compelled the latter to set off for the public examination.
Before leaving, Choi entrusted his family to the care of his friend and neighbour, Cheung Kong Chai.
After a hard study, Choi was ultimately awarded the highest graduate, and the Prime Minister seeing Choi a bright young promising youth, offer to give him his daughter in hand of marriage in spite of Choi’s protest. Even though Choi had attempted to resign from his official rank if he was compelled to marry again, however, his resignation was turned down and the marriage was finally held. After the wedding Choi still resided in the capital city with his newly wed bride and father-in-law.
During this time, a draught was just happening in the town where Tsui Ng Nan and her folks lived. Everywhere was dry and rainless, and with the little food she got, she all reserved for her father and mother-in-law. At first, Choi’s parents thought that she had already reserved enough food for herself, but when they learned of the truth, they were deeply touched at her filial pity, and eventually refused to take all the food from her. As time passed, they could no longer stand with the little food they had, thus they became weaker and weaker in strength, and finally Choi’s parents died of hunger and old age. Taking pity, Cheung helped Tsui Ng Nan to bury her folks, and in addition gave her a sum of money enough for her trip to find her husband. So with the little sum of money and a guitar, Ng Nan sang her way to the city.
Meanwhile, Choi who was now living luxuriously with his present wife, did not feel happy at all, for his heart was always feeling guilty of deserting Tsui Ng Nan and his aged parents behind. His wife didn’t know of his story, and seeing how unhappy he was, she begged her husband to tell her the problem that was actually bothering him day and night. When Niu, his wife, finally learned of the truth, she felt very sorry for the error she had committed as she didn’t know that Choi had a wife beforehand. Wishing to pay back for the wrong she had done, Niu begged her father to permit Choi to return to his own native town.
It came to pass that Tsui Ng Nan finally arrived at the city and found to her knowledge that Choi had already married to somebody else. Amidst agony and anger, Ng Nan took her leave. Later when Choi learned of his wife's visit, and saw the guitar that she had left behind, he immediately set off his pursuit, and met Ng Nan on the way, who ultimately forgave Choi after much persuasion, and they both rode towards a homeward journey to their own town for retirement.

趙五娘,美而慧,嫁士人蔡伯喈爲妻,敬公婆,愛丈夫,深得鄰居張廣才讚許。
會朝廷開科取士,伯喈雖有金榜題名之意,奈感父母年邁,不忍遠離。
蔡父望子成龍,强之應試,母不以爲然,二老幾乎衝突。五娘亦以椿萱在堂,子不遠行爲辭,蔡父勃然色變,指伯喈迷戀閨房之樂,以致意忘消沉。伯喈嘿然,遂行成。
伯喈臨行,以家事托張廣才,張翁慨然允諾。五娘南浦送別,叮嚀再三,夫妻黯然而分。
伯喈至京應試,一舉成名,官拜議郞。
當朝牛丞相,見蔡少年英俊,卓爾不凡,欲招之爲婿,並奏請聖上主婚。蔡因本人旣巳婚配,何能再娶,拒之再三,仍屬無效,雖爲此上表辭官,終因君命難違,强之再婚,並繼續留京爲官。
蔡之家鄕陳留郡,遭遇旱災,赤地千里,民不得食,五娘變賣所有,難以爲繼,聞開糴義倉,往求升斗,不料途中爲飢民所劫,張廣才路過見之,以己粮助其歸。
五娘以張廣才所濟之米奉公婆,己則以糠粃充飢。公婆初則懷疑,以爲五娘暗藏美食,旣而窺得其情,心大不忍,乃與其共食,不幸被嗆而亡。
五娘無以爲殮,乃往長街賣髮,呼聲凄凉,路人酸鼻,事爲張廣才知,復助之,公婆得以埋葬。
五娘决計往京尋夫,描寫公婆遺容,背負琵琶上路,張廣才贈以盤費,泫然目送。
伯喈招親相府後,牛丞相不使其歸,因牛無子,留其以娛晩景也。而蔡日夕思家,無時或釋,一日牛氏探悉其情,恨其父不該將己配其有婦之夫,因伊初不知蔡有髮妻也,然木已成舟,恨也無益,乃請父讓蔡歸去探親。
牛丞相初不允,旣而命僕人來旺,往陳留郡接蔡父母及其妻來。
來旺至鄕間,遇張廣才,始知蔡父母已去世,五娘亦已進京尋夫矣。廣才授杖,囑代責伯喈,來旺乃受杖而別。
五娘至京,悉蔡招親相府,棄舊迎新,且將堂上二老,抛諸腦後,不義不孝,如此夫婿,ー無可取,乃留下二老遺容及琵琶,絕望而去。伯喈獲睹琵琶,絕望而去。伯喈獲睹琵琶及遺容後,始知五娘踪跡,亟上馬追趕,得遇五娘於途中,適來旺亦持蔡父之遺杖而至,伯喈甘受杖責,並向五娘表示願偕歸隱之意,五娘卒亦恕之焉。

趙五娘與「琵琶記」
蔡伯喈是東漢時代陳留郡人士,博學多才,性篤孝。在初平初,官拜中郞將,封高陽鄕。董卓死,蔡伯喈被株連,廋死獄中,除女兒文姬,二個兒子也被殺戮。
到了宋朝,有人假借蔡伯喈之名,編了一齣戯,諷剌當時的權貴棄糟糠再娶,因爲寫得精彩動人,一時流傳四方,婦孺皆知。
劉後村有詩曰:「死後是非誰管得,滿村爭唱蔡中郞。」可見此劇動人心弦。
元朝的高則誠是個寫詞曲的好手,他得到了這個曲本,又加以潤色,使內容份外充實,並題名曰:琵琶記。家傳戶誦,使死後之蔡伯喈名揚四海。
撇開這齙戲的眞實與否不談,以戲論戲,這是一部好戲,它描劃夫妻之愛,天倫之情,朋友之義,及高高在上的大官之自私,都有獨到的筆觸。尤其是戲中的女主角趙五娘惹人憐愛,她代表了女性堅强的一面,對公婆的尊敬孝順,對丈夫的温柔體貼,對艱苦的不屈不撓,在在都使人對她肅然起敬,誰敢說:「女人是弱者」?
聯合影業有限公司拍攝的「趙五娘」,是「琵琶記」改編的。把不必要的塲合刪去,增添了戲劇性外,還强調蔡伯喈和趙五娘的愛情,如蔡伯喈所唱︰「千山萬水我也要跟隨你!」說明他對趙五娘的精誠之愛。
李湄在「趙五娘」中飾演趙五娘,趙雷飾演蔡伯喈,石英飾演牛小姐,都有超水準演出。製片人王龍說:「我不敢說趙五娘的成績是怎麽樣好,但是我敢肯定的相信觀衆看過一次後,還想看第二次,第三次……」
