"SWEET AS HONEY"
Synopsis.
After spending a very pleasant honeymoon, Chang Ming Yang (Fu Chi) and Wan Wai Lang (Sha Moon), the newly married couple, return to their little love nest feeling sweet as honey. But that does not mean that they have cleared up their hearts for a true and thorough understanding. On the contrary, Yang Ming even tries to hide some of his heart secrets from Wei Lang, especially concerning the past romance with his cousin (Wong Shi Yuen).
Complications arise when this hidden cousin of Yang Ming writes to Ming Yang from Singapore informing him that she will soon come to pay him a visit. Ming Yang makes an attempt to hide the news from Wei Lang, but the worst accident happens when the unopened letter of his cousin falls into Wei Lang’s handbag instead.
A battle of wit is thus started between the husband and wife, during which Ming Yang manoeuvres his top wisdom to snatch the letter from Wei Lang, but fails. In desperation, he has to result to telling lies, and telling more lies, but that only tends to make matters worse and even more complicated.
Yang Ming's father-in-law (Shi Lai) is in sympathy with Yang Ming, because about 30 years ago, he has also been in love with his cousin. But bitter experiences have taught him that by revealing the truth to his wife, he becomes the target of all blames during the last 30 miserable years.* In trying to help his son-in-law, he finds himself also entangled into the confusing mess. When the worst comes, he has to shift all the suspiscion and blames to his business manager.
Old King (Wu Chin Ping), Yang Ming's schoolmate, is also in sympathy with Yang Ming. He steps out to help Yang Ming as a chivalrous gentlemen, but his self styled chilvalrism only succeeds in bringing in more troubles for himself. His fiancee (Wong Chung) even suspects that he is intimately linked with the scandalous affair, almost verging on the break of their engagement.
In the midst of all these, the final climax is reached when Yang Ming's cousin Finally arrives to meet him. Yang Ming is compelled to accomodate her, but without the knowledge of Wei Lang, which makes Wei Lang feeling even more suspiscious. Closely watched by Wei Lang, Yang Ming is feeling the worst in his heart, as he is haunted both by his conscience and the miserable atmosphere looming oyer his once happy and sweet home.
Luckily Wei Lang has a very wise and understanding mother, who acquires a clear understanding to distinguish between the truth and lies. Under the close watch of Wei Lang and her mother, Yang Ming s mind is greatly confused, and in trying to clear up both for himself and his father-in-law, he begs his cousin to admit to Wei Lang and her mother that she is King's lover, also having an affair with his father-in-law's business manager. But all these fancy lies end only in a simple joke, as they have been overheard and discovered in time by Wei Lang and her wise mother.
The daughter and wise mother have also discovered that the cousin of Yang Ming is a genuine married woman, and that Yang Ming is truly in love with Wei Lang. All the fusses they made mean nothing but to prove the established truth that the secret of a harmonous married life lies in clear understanding and open heart; fancy lies can never make a story perfect.
At any rate, the story concerned his young couple has ended in perfection, because they have opened their hearts to truth, thus they both feel sweet as honey hereafter.
