"A TEENAGE GIRL"
Synopsis.
Liang Tan Wai (Chu Hung), a teenage High school girl, pretty and innocent, enjoys a rather happy and comfortable life until the death of her father, which brings her all the miseries. Her elder brother Shi Chia (Shi Lai) wields the financial power of the family; her sister-in-law (Wong Shee Yung), sharp and selfish, her elder sister (Ho Shan), proud and dictative, and topping all these, her mother (Chen Chi), being a concubine, has long been eyed as a despise of the family. The family's wealth gradually drains away after the passing away of the old father; Tan Wai is taken as a burden and hindrance of the family by her brother and sister-in-law, and both are eager to get rid of her, but Shi Chia pretends to be very kind to both Tan Wai and her mother. Though Tan Wai has to give up schooling due to lack of financial support from her brother, and her mother has to work like a slave for the family, both mother and daughter tolernae for they take Shi Chia's false kindness shown toward them as true and real.
While studying in the school, Tan Wai meets a school mate named Chen Ying Hau (Kiang Han), a very honest and sincere youth, with whom Tan Wai has established a close friendship. Since Tan Wai gives up schooling, Ying Hau has tried to help her to continue her study by taking up jobs at the same time. Chen's well meant effort is deeply appreciated by Tan Wai.
Louis Wu (Kan Han), son of the wealthy Chairman of Board of Directors of the firm for whom Shi Chia works, just returned from France, and takes interest on Tan Wai. Shi Chia is most anxious to put the match through as he thinks it will not only mean to get rid of the family's burden, but will also lead him to other profitable prospects. This move is also strongly supported by Tan Wai's mother, and Tan Wai is thus thrown into a serious mental conflict. She goes to see Ying Hau for consultation and encouragement, but is greatly disappointed for being badly insulted by Ying Hau's parents telling her that they have already made arrangement for their son's marriage and that Tan Wai shall lay her hands off the marriage. Exasperated and in utter desperation, Tan Wai accepts Louis's invitation to a party, but this is again misunderstood by Ying Hau, who beseechs Tan Wai to see him for explaination.
Tan Wai is not accustomed to the wealthy envioroment displayed in Louis's party, and when Louis makes an attempt to kiss her, she is scared and runs away. Louis threatens Shi Chia that he will not make any investment in Shi Chia's preposition as he has promised unless his sister will consent to marry him. Shi Chia yields to Louis and makes promises that he will be responsible to deliver his sister on C. O. D. basis.
Tan Wai goes to meet Ying Hau, and all misunderstandings are cleared up. Ying Hau has decided to marry on his free own will, instead of being bossed by his parents; Tan Wai shall continue her study on half working plan. But Tan Wai's mother is still hoping her daughter to get married to the wealthy Louis, still depending on Shi Chia’s intended match to come through.
Knowing Tan Wai's kind and soft heart, Shi Chia tries to influence his sister from another angle by raising a false alarm that her dead father had been badly in debt, which news greatly shock Tan Wai’s mother. Shi Chia persuades Tan Wai on a very concerned and sympathetic tune, for which Tan Wai is forced to accept her brother's proposal to sacrifice her life's happiness for the sake of her mother and dead father. But just at this moment, Tan Wai overhears the quarrel which takes place between her brother and his wife, thus revealing the pretext they planned in regard to dividing the spoils for their own selfish benefits. Tan Wai feels as if she is awaken from a horrid dream. She tears the cheque Shi Chia offered her, and runs away with her mother from the depressed family to follow the new course of life as planned by Ying Hau.
