“GIRL ON THE FRONT PAGE”
— THE STORY—
“Disappeared!”, screamed the headlines. One girl, Tzin Shiao-chin, was two days absent from her home, and her fate became a matter of conjecture.
Miss Lee Za-fong, Reporter, was instructed to follow up the leads and to gather in the latest develop-ments. Lee was about the same age as Tzin, and very keen to find out the truth.
From interviewing Tzin’s family, old mother and young sister, Tzin’s former colleagues at the Tsi Tsoong Hospital and her erstwhile sponsor for the job, Mr. Taylor Pei, listening to their tales and observing their reactions, Lee began to get a rough picture of Tzin’s life, her happiness and tragedy,......
Tzin had been an orphan, and her family desperately poor after her father’s death with her mother working to the bone to support her and her sisters. But for the help of her classmates and teacher, she would not have the chance of study or graduating from her mother school at all. Thus she had come out of school some time ago young, pretty, inexperienced but full of wonder and dream.
She got a job as a training nurse in the Tsi Tsoong Hospital, though poorly paid, still it was a great boon to the family, easing up the crushing hardship they had faced for so long. At same time under the force of circumstances, Tzin gradually became acquainted with the “better life” and “good things”.
Fascinated by Pei’s sophistication, Tzin gradually drifted away from her childhood friend, Shih Ling, who reminded her too much of her indebtedness toward their mother school. She became anxious to “im-prove” herself, even through false means supplied by Pei. Getting in deeper, she had lost her sense of right or wrong.
The deceit was discovered, and Tzin was dismissed by the Hospital. Then she discovered herself discarded by Pei as well, and left bewildered and shamed and without any friend, all her hopes dashed to the ground......
“Will she take her own life?”
Lee Za-fong asked herself and Shih, who offered to help. They exerted redoubled efforts, fearing they might already be too late to save the poor young girl. “Too late!”
When they finally saw Tzin, she was on the roof of a tall building, and already jumping out......
Fortunately, her falling body was caught by a sun-awning very much lower down, and Tzin escaped with only some minor injuries. But her mental lacerations will need a very long time under the loving care of her family and the warm friendly feelings of Shih and Lee to cure.
