A WELL TO DO FAMILY.

Synopsis.

The family of the Kong's can be truly considered as a “well to do family”. This implies not merely on the wealth it acquired, but mainly counts on Kong's dutiful wife and three lovely daughters. The elder daughter, aged 18 (Dah Pao), the second, aged 15(Er Pao) and the third, aged 8 (San Pao). Those alone would complete the happiness of Kong's family, but the pity of it is the old Kong is far too conventional to appreciate the true happiness of life.

Old Kong falls for a pretty restaurant waitress, Ah Mei. Little Li, a co-worker in his office, is also in favour of his choice. This leads Old Kong to get involved in several unpleasant complications, for Ah Mei is a married woman, still much devoted to her sick and disabled workman husband. Between Kong and Ah Mei, there exist certain misinterpretations. Kong has taken Ah Mei/s professional courtesy toward him as true love, while Ah Mei has taken Kong as a benevolent and kind hearted elder man, always ready to help those who are in need. Meanwhile Kong's persuasion of Ah Mei is. being shadowed by his daughters, thus causing unpleasant splits between his wife and daughters.

Little Li advises Kong to propose to his wife to grant him the licence of adopting an extra concubine. In doing so, Kong immediately senses the bad reactions from all members of his family. Kong's wife makes an appeal to the managing director of Kong's firm, but the understanding boss thinks there is nothing abnormal for a middle aged man to acquire an extra wife. On the other hand, Kong's two elder daughters make direct approach to Ah Mei, in attempting to convince Ah Mei to quit Kong, for the sake of Kong's family. All these result to battling conflicts between old Kong and his daughters, also to Ah Mei and her sick husband, verging on the breaking up of two homes.

While Ah Mei has succeeded in convincing her sick husband of her true devotion to him, in that Kong is but an honest and helpful friend to her, the conversation is overheard by Kong, which strikes Kong's conscience to make up his decision to quite Ah Mei. Meanwhile Kong s wife and his daughters have all set out to locate Kong, for he has not returned home for 2 days on account of a family quarrel. Kong goes to see Little Li do inform him of his right decision to quit Ah Mei, but upon his arrival, he overheard Li's son telling his father that Li’s wife has committed suicide for Li carrying an affair with an outside woman.

Kong is greatly touched by the lesson he learned from Li, but on returning to his own home, he also discovers the house completely empty. He runs out to fatch his wife and daughter. On the way, he sees his third daughter run over by a car in crossing the road. She is rushed to the hospital with a broken leg, possibly she might be cripled for life.

Though, after all, Kong succeeds to save his happy home, the regretable lessons he learned will forever leave a deep scar in his life's memory.
