THE GIRL WITH A THOUSAND FACES
Synopsis
A young girl, Koo Ling Sau, alias Lam Sa, applied for a vacancy existing in a movie company and with her distinguished ability in performance got the position. She was particularly good in disguising herself as various characters. The director of studio appreciated her remarkable acting.
Her aged grand-mother was strongly opposed to Koo Ling Sau's decision to become an actress. Ling Sau's father, Koo Chung Kay, a retired officer, spent his days in writing poetry at home. Koo's house was rented to other families such as Cheung Lai Kwong, a newspaper editor, single, Mui Yu Ying, a wealthy merchant's concubine, Chu Yung Hin, a fortune-teller, with his wife and two children.
Cheung encouraged Ling Sau to become an actress and lent her a book to study. In the night Ling Sau disguised herself as an actress and played her role in the lighted hall. Her grandmother mistook her for her daughter-in-law, Ling Sau's mother, and cried out, “I see a ghost! I see a ghost!”. Taking advantage of the opportunity Ling Sau decided to find out the truth of her mother.
Her grand-mother told her that her son, Chung Kay, Ling Sau's father, fell in love with a famous actress, Fa Yim Hung who later gave birth to a baby girl, that was Ling Sau. The grand-mother insisted that her father should give up his illegal wife on the ground that an actress would stain the reputation of her family. Being absolutely obedient to his mother Chung Kay had to do so. Fa Yim Hung left with a broken heart. She was also threatened and insulted by two hoodlums arranged by Chung Kay's mother. Fa Yim Hung, being afraid of the hoodlums, pretended to flirt with them. She was then charged with indecent conduct.
Having told the story Ling Sau's grand-mother burst into tears and embraced Ling Sau sorrowfully. Chung Kay entered and complained of his mistake for letting Fa Yim Hung depart. Fortunately Cheong Lai Kwong found out, with the help of his reporters, that Fa Yim Hung was still living in Macao, working hard for her living. They rushed to Macao and located Fa Yim Hung who related her past story. She said that her love for Chung Kay could never change therefore she worked for her own living without looking for another husband. The whole family was happy to be together again. The re-union moved Mui Yu Ying's heart and she also looked for a job to make a living without relying on the wealthy merchant as she disliked to be a concubine again.
