NEW FIST OF FURY
With the death of Chen Chun, the “Chn’g Wu” martial arts school was under great attack by the Japanese. Only Chen Chun’s fiancee Li-er and two other students Fatty and Kao Kit were left.
Li-er with bitterness in her heart vowed revenge. Her sole ambition was to rebuild the “Chn’g Wu” School. Thus with the help of a Chinese Inspector, Li-er and her two friends fled Shanghai for Taiwan. Upon arrival in Taiwan the harbour was heavily guarded by the Japanese who were all out to capture all the Chinese rebels. Fortunately, Li-er and her two friends managed to escape without harm.
All they lost was a small wooden box stolen by pickpocket A Lung. Thinking that he had stolen something precious, A Lung was overjoyed. But, to his disappointment, the box contained nothing more than a double cudgel! Little did he know that this was the deadly weapon of Chen Chun!
Li-er went at once to look for her aging grand father Hsu, who was also a martial arts expert and instructor. When Hsu learnt of Li-er’s intentions, he told her that Taiwan, just as Shanghai, was tyrannized by the Japanese. He advised Li-er against her plans but later gave in because of Li-er’s determination.
In Taiwan at that time, apart from Hsu’s martial arts school, there were several other major ones the “Seven Peaks” operated by another Chinese, the “Sun” School operated by Chinese traitor, Lin Chin-kuei and the Japanese “Yamoto” School under the leadership of Okamura. The “Yamoto” School however was only a martial arts school in name. Its main task was in fact to suppress the Chinese and to capture Chinese undergrounders. Meanwhile, Lin of the “Sun” School, knowing that the Japanese were behind him, used his powers to bully fellow Chinese forcing them to join his School. A Lung was one such victim. When A Lung refused to yield, he was attacked by Lin’s men. A Lung tried to use the double cudgel to protect himself but not knowing the intricacies of the weapon, ended up brutally wounded. Fortunately, he was rescued by Li-er.
The wounded A Lung was taken back to his guardian Chin, who being poor could not give him the needed medical care. Chin therefore had to resort to A Lung’s mother Yien Hung for help. Yien Hung was working in a brothel and therefore felt ashamed to let A Lung know that she was his mother! All she could do was to look at her son with tear-filled eyes from afar! One day, Okamura was confronted by an assasin. Okamura concluded that this was the doing of the “Seven Peaks” School. He thus went with his daughter Michiko, also an expert in Japanese martial arts, to destroy the “Seven Peaks” School. Still dissatisfied, he issued an invitation to all the leaders of the other Schools to attend and join in what Okamura termed the “Big Martial Arts Family” with the intention of gaining control on all of them. Out of fear, most of the leaders attended except for Hsu. Okamura was furious and vowed revenge.
When Li-er saw A Lung again, she saw the potential in him and tried to persuade him to take up Kung Fu. However, to her disappointment, he refused because he felt that kung fu skills were only used to bully fellow human beings as Lin was doing!
Then came Hsu’s eightieth birthday. Okamura decided to take his revenge. Together with his whole clan, he caused endless troubles at the celebrations. It was only with tact and tolerance that Hsu managed to get them away. However, this proved too upsetting for the aged Hsu and he passed away.
The bereaved Li-er could take it no longer. She appealed to the fellow Chinese to help her rebuild the “Chn’g Wu” School and to fight Japanese oppression. Many joined in but then traitor Lin and Okamura’s daughter came. They wrecked the new School and then insulted and humiliated the Chinese and all that the new students could do was to stand aside and watch in fear as they know that their skills were no where near that of their enemies!
It was then that A Lung stood up. With a bunch of chopsticks, he demonstrated that unity was strength! He then used blood to write the two words “Chn’g Wu” on his chest and carried the fallen sign of the School high above his head to Li-er asking her to accept him as a student of the “Chn’g Wu” School. Everyone and particularly Li-er was touched. Thus the “Chn’g Wu” School was once more formed with many followers, all dedicated to the cause.
From then on, A Lung dedicated himself entirely to learning the kung fu arts. Li-er taught him all that she had learnt from Chen Chun, including the much treasured art of the “Fist of Fury”.
Okamura soon learnt that the new “Chn’g Wu” School was harbouring Chinese patriots. He therefore schemed to capture them all. Okamura’s plans however were overheard by Yien Hung who rushed to pass on the news to Li-er. Thus Okamura’s plans were all in vain. Neither was he able to get any information when he tried to question Li-er and the other dedicated students of the “Chn’g Wu” School.
Okamura then realized that the Chinese and this new School was not to be slighted. He thus devised another plan. He staged a big kung Fu competition and demanded that all the Schools attend. His aim was to destroy the various leaders so that he could have power and control over all the Schools. One by one, the leaders were killed until finally A Lung with all his determination and his newly acquired “Fist of Fury” killed Okamura! However, for A Lung, Li-er and all the others, victory was only short lived as the competition grounds had long been surrounded by the Japanese. There was no way out and with all their might, they fought and died as Chinese patriots.
