THE DANCING MILLIONAIRESS
(Synopsis)
The Four Seas Enterprises are the city's biggest corporation dealing in all kinds of investments and businesses. Among its branches is a bank. Among the bank's chief officials is Manager Hsu, an old man without offspring but a kind heart.
One weekend, Manager Hsu and his wife go to watch young people skating. They are attracted by the skills of young Miss Kuo Ling-ling.
Ling-ling discovers the manager has left behind his briefcase. She sends it back to him. They sit down for a talk and the manager learns that Ling-ling's father, troupe owner Kuo Wei-teh, is about to go out of business because of financial troubles.
The manager visits Wei-teh, promises him a loan and asks him to stay in business. The troupe owner is overwhelmed. He asks all his men to get together again for their new performances.
But dancer Chen Chun-mai does not appear. He has obtained a new job as driver for the famous Mei family. His friends finally locate him, then test-driving the Mei Rolls Royce, and force him to attend the revue meeting.
Chen does not know that he is driving for Miss Mei Chien-ju, board chairman of the Four Seas Enterprises. But Manager Hsu knows the car when he sees it. He immediately jumps to the conclusion that Chen is Miss Mei's boy friend.
He tells Kuo the loan is assured. Kuo rolls out his best treatment for the dancer. Chen is puzzled.
Chen goes to the Mei house with the car. He is told that he has been dismissed for not being punctual. Chen shrugs and leaves.
Miss Mei holds the business conference. Manager Hsu proposes investment in the troupe. The lady is not enthusiastic. She asks the manager to decide himself.
Troupe owner Kuo calls on Chen, only to find the young man in poor humor. He wants to know why. The dancer has to invent an excuse and he says Miss Mei and he are quarrelling. Kuo consoles him and asks him to patch up.
Kuo decides that he too should help them patch up. He sends gifts to Chen in Miss Mei's name and flowers to Miss Mei in Chen's name. Miss Mei is greatly annoyed.
Soon, the newspapers get word of the "romance." Miss Mei is called in by her aunt who gives her some stern advice about the pitfalls of being involved with dancers. Miss Mei thus decides to investigate and put a stop to all such rumors.
She attends the troupe's press conference, disguising herself as a reporter. She barges into Chen's dressing room and asks him if he actually is Miss Mei's boy friend. Chen tells her the truth but asks her to keep it secret since the troupe needs the loan.
Miss Mei consents. She consents too to meet Chen at dinner. They dance and Chen is surprised by her dancing skills. He invites her to the troupe for training. They practice until early in the morning.
Mei goes home only to find police have been asked to search for her.
She goes back to her office and calls in troupe owner Kuo and dancer Chen for an interview. She asks her ugly secretary to pose as Miss Mei to have some fun. The secretary demands that Chen marry her. The disgusted Chen dashes from the door.
Owner Kuo thinks everything is finished. He summons a meeting to announce the end of the world when Miss Mei comes with a huge cheque. She tells them that she is Miss Mei and she is joining the troupe as dancer.
That is the beginning of the show but the end of our story.
