SYNOPSIS

Fang Lan, famous film actress and idol of thousands, marries Dr. Chang Chung-hsien, young and successful surgeon, at the height of her carrier, much to the astonishment of Madam Yeh, her ballet tutor, and Mr. Li, film director, both worrying that Fang Lan may give up dancing and acting after marriage.

After returning from her honeymoon in Europe, Fang Lan is happy with her new life and disappoints her film fans by deciding to become a good housewife. However, Dr. Chang's duties at the hospital makes her a lonely wife and she finally expresses her willingness, not without encouragement from Madam Yeh, to act again. This Dr. Chang strongly objects; he not only throws out newspaper reporters who come to ask for an interview with Fang Lan, but also *tells his wife that her profession will affect his career. Unwilling to start a quarrel, Fang Lan drops the subject, but goes to Madam Yeh to rehearse the dance scenes of her new film without Dr. Chang's knowledge.

When Dr. Chang discovers that Fang Lan has been hiding this from him all the time, he comes into a direct clash with her and walks out in fury when Fang Lan says that she loves him but cannot give up her work. The marriage crisis of the doctor and the actress becomes the talk of the town; Fang Lan carries on with her rehearsals, but Dr. Chang, his self-respect hurt, resigns from his post and shuts himself from the outside world.

During one of the rehearsals, Madam Yeh collapses and is sent to the hospital. She has a serious heart attack and needs an immediate operation, which only Dr. Chang is capable of performing. Fang Lan goes to ask her husband to save her tutor's life and the doctor, happy to see his wife again, is subsequently heartbroken to learn that she has come only to summon him to hospital but not for reconciliation. However, he preforms a successful operation and before long Madam Yeh is again able to supervise the choreography of Fang Lan's new film.

On the first day of shooting, Dr. Chang comes to the studio to greet Fang Lan. He has finally realised that he must respect her career same as she respects his. This happy reunion adds new life to Fang Lan, and she does a wonderful song and dance scene with her colleagues, which is filmed in gorgeous Eastman colour.
