THE PRECIOUS LITTLE MOON
(Synopsis)
LIEU YUEN YUEN (Chu Hung), young and pretty, is regarded by all her schoolmates as an all around student. In the school basket ball team, she is elected captain of the team. Besides being the pride and a much petted daughter of her parents (Wu Chin Ping and Yu Wan Fei), who takes her as the "Precious Little Moon" of the family, she is further spoiled by the exagerrating admiration pouring upon her from her cousin (Chou Yan), who is fixing an eye on her as a lover candidate. Yuen Yuen, taking advantage of all such showering favours, demands to buy a piano, which her parents readily consent, though much too heavy for them to bear the payments.
In school, Yuen Yuen's unbecoming pride meets a keen competitor. Hu Chi Ming (Kao Yuan) is her new classmate, a young man holding a school record even surpassing that of Yuen Yuen. To Hu, Yuen Yuen harbours a mixed feeling of likening and jealousy.
The school basket ball team is making an ambitious preparation to win the game in a scheduled inter-school meet, and Hu is appointed to take the place of the coach who is on sick leave. Yuen Yuen is delighted at first as she takes it an opportunity to get more acquainted with Hu, but bad reactions soon arises when Hu makes certain frank corrections on Yuen Yuen's playing technique, which she takes as an insult to her personal pride.
The situation even becomes worsened when during one friendly game, Hu blames Yuen Yuen responsible for the cause of defeat. Yuen Yuen quarrels with Hu and withdraws from the team as captain. All her schoolmates make an attempt to mediate, but result to little avail. Yuen Yuen cannot relieve herself from the grudge against Hu for hurting her personal pride. Just at this opportune moment, Yuen Yuen is approached by her cousin who offers to take her out for a series of funs and frivolous entertainments, thus making her forget all her school routings. Yuen Yuen's school records immediately drops to a disgraceful standard.
In the school laboratory, Yuen Yuen is conducting a test disregarding Hu's advises. She risks on her own idea trying to maintain her personal pride. An explosion occurs, and in attempting to save Yuen Yuen, Hu is badly injured in both of his eyes. Hu faints and is taken home for cure.
Yuen Yuen begins to feel the great blunders she has committed when she learns that her parents cannot afford to pay for the piano, and when she goes to Hu's house to offer an appology, she is even more deeply touched in overhearing what Hu has said to his schoolmates that he is ready to forgive Yuen Yuen if she will only repent by discarding her false conviction of vanity and personal pride. Hu is then sleeping in bed with his eyes bandaged.
Yuen Yuen repents at last. When the inter-school basket ball game takes place, she has forgotten all her prides and prejudices. She is standing happily in line with Hu and other schoolmates, singing the school song in harmonious chorus with all of them, vouching to contribute her best to win the great glory for the school.
