“FLOWERS & CHEERS”
The Story
Wang Shiao-ching (Shek Hwei) dreams of acting in movies some day, her father (Li Tse-yu) wants her to become a pianist and her mother (Liu Lien) intends her to Study medicine. There are always arguments thereon in this otherwise happy family.
One day Shiao-ching goes to attend a charity gala performance of her favorite Great Wall Studio actors and actresses group. In the queue for tickets, she gets acquainted with a blundering young fellow music lover, Chang Shiao-shen (Chang Tseng), who brags of himself as a budding great artist. Not to be overcome, Shiao-ching introduces hereself as one of the Great Wall Studio's starlet, and a budding great actress.
The programs soon started. Shiao-ching and Chang, seated side by side, are enthralled by the singing and dancing performances. Inface, Chang is so excited by the hilarious dance program, “Stepping on the Maidens' Toes”, that he inadvertantly also stepped on Shiao-ching’s toes, but with crushing force.
To show his contrition, Chang offers to take Shiao-ching home on his motor cycle. Unfortunately, it breaks down on the way, and Shiao-ching has to help him push the machine home.
Later, it is discovered that Chang after all is the new tenent of Wang Family’s spare room, and Shiao-ching’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wang are very hard put to withstand his many “artistic” ways. They are more prejudiced against an acting career for Shiao-ching than ever. However, both Shiao-ching and Chang have written in secret to the Great Wall Studios to apply for talent tests.
Eventually, after a few days of hard waiting, they receive each an invitation from the Studio to join in the funs of the Studio's eighth anniversary party, where they will be examined. Fortunately Mr. and Mrs. Wang are socially engaged that night. The young couple go to the party without their knowledge, but with Shiao-ching’s younger brother and sister in tow, who have discovered Shiao-ching’s secret.
The children are deliriously happy, meeting so many of their admired stars, who not only talk with them but also guide them to the big auditorium to see the famous folks dance, “The Ten Sisters” performed by ten of Great Wall's actresses. Not only they, but also Mr. and Mrs. Wang, who have just arrived to take these mischevous children home, are captivated completely. The latter also sit down to enjoy the show.
As the crucial part of their examination, Shiao-ching and Chang are each given a part to perform in the exhibitions program. Chang does his part successfully in the “Flower Drum Dance” but when it is Shiao-ching’s turn to go, she is discovered by her parents who immediately give chase.
Shiao-ching escapes into the dressing room, where she grabs the costume of a dancer and disguises herself. She runs through several doors with her parents in hot persuit, and suddenly discovers herself on the big stage facing the audience. The music starts, other dancers starts dancing on to the stage. and Shiao-ching’s retreat is cut off by her exasperated parents. Luckly Shiao-ching is really talented and very adaptable. She tries her best to catch up the steps of the other dancers, which gives the entire dance program a mischevous overtone and is enthusiastically received by the audience.
Shiao-ching’s performance is judged well above the standard of acceptance by the Studio judges. This is surprising agreed to by Mr. and Mrs. Wang, who are now convinced of the true direction of their daughter’s talents.
The story ends with Shiao-ching and Chang heartily congratulate each other on the first realization of their long cherished dreams.
