THE SPELL OF LOVE
STARRING Mao Mei, Han Ying. Kwan Shan & Ong Wu.
SYNOPSIS
This is a story of love, or rather, a story about the spell of love. This is a treacherous world, a world which looks so beautiful yet is in fact so very practical, a world where wealth and social status serves as yardsticks in measuring everything. Fortunately, love is not subject to such measurements, at least not in this story, and once you fall under its spell, you just can't help it; you have to do away with all fales pretentions, in order that the flower of love may nurture and bloom.
Lin Li-chuan(MaoMei)and Chu Chia-ling(KwanShan)give us a good example here. Falling in love by first sight, they mistake each other for someone else一 he thinks she is the sister of a rich merchant, she think she is the son of a millionaire. Their friendship develops rather rapidly, but at the same time they are both suffering from a secret fear, a fear that one day the other party will find out his or her true identity. Comedy springs from numerous awkard situations when he is confronted with the geniune son of the millionaire, and she has to accept courtship at the house of the merchant, who has no sister, but does have a young wife. Misunderstanding is bound to a rise and the denouement is one of the most hilarious yet to be brought to the screen. When she learns that he has really no wealth, and when he finds out that she is merely a salesgirl, do they call it off? No! With mutual love and understanding, they decide to start everything anew
Wu Su-fang(HanYing)and Wong Ching-teh(OngWu)furnish another example. They are old school-mates and when they meet again, the passion of love is easily cherished. However, young Ching-teh is too honest a man to become successful in this world of ours, and his venture in love is no exception. The future mother-in-law becomes one of the main obstacles and his repeated blunders at the most inappropriate moments and under the most inappropriate circumstances render his case almost hopeless. Incidentally, Su-fang is the cousin of Li-chuan and with her own love still at stake, finds time to “coach” Li-chuan in her love strategy, which of course only makes matters worse. On the other hand, Ching-teh is also a good friend of Chia-liang, and he is so anxious to find Chia-liang a girl friend that he gets the brilliant idea of introducing Li-chuan to him. The consequences? You have to see to believe it.
All in all, the experience of these four youngsters serves to bring out a true picture of the world around us, and at the same time to prove one thing— love always triumphs. However, the unexpected twists make this triumph somewhat different, and a touch of comedy makes the whole thing wonderfully entertaining.
