Interviewee: Leung Tai Fai
Participating Organization: Christians for Hong Kong Society
Mr. Leung Tai Fai was born in 1965 and graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Motivated by the heated discussions on the Public Order Ordinance in the 1980s, Mr. Leung became convinced that Christians should have their voices heard on social events. In order to do so, he took part in establishing the Christians for Hong Kong Society in 1987 with Mr. Chiu Sin Wing and others. Mr. Leung has become one of the core members of the organization. He now serves as the vice-principal of the Church of Christ in China Yenching College where he also teaches liberal studies.
The interview started with Mr. Leung’s childhood memories and university life in CUHK, as well as his conversion experience. He recalled the social and political participation of the Christian students of CUHK in the 1980s. He shared his experience of setting up the Christians for Hong Kong Society in 1987. He introduced how the Society made decisions for social participation actions, and the details of its daily operations. He reflected on the core religious values that motivated the Society’s social actions. Mr. Leung also stated his observations and viewpoints on the differences in governance of the colonial government as compared with the SAR government.
