Interviewee: Fung Wai Man

Fung Wai Man  馮煒文

Mr. Fung Wai Man was born in in 1940 and attended Wah Yan College and graduated from the University of Hong Kong. Mr. Fung was the director of the Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee (1969-1980). He then moved to Geneva for ten years and worked as the Secretary for Evangelism in the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism, with the World Council of Churches (1981-1991). Later he returned to Hong Kong and worked in the Hong Kong Christian Institute. He later became a simultaneous interpreter for government events. During his Christian activities Mr. Fung pointed out many significant theological ideas, like the “sinned-against theology” inspiring reflective thinking among his contemporaries and fellow-Christians.


Mr. Fung shared his experience in the University of Hong Kong as a student and later as a graduate tutor. He reflected on the contrast of life between working class and wealthy people of that time. He also shared his observations on youth work in the church in the 1960s. Being the director of Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee (CIC) for 11 years (1969-1980), Mr. Fung recalled the change of working philosophy of CIC under his directorship. He introduced his famous theological idea, “sinned-against”, to us in the videos. Mr. Fung also shared about his service in the office of the World Council of Churches, Geneva, and his participation in the Hong Kong Christian Institute after returning to Hong Kong.
